Each newsletter, we share some of our students' literacy learning. Today, LC5 students share some of their writing relating to this term's Inquiry.
This week it’s our turn to share our writing in the Writers’ Showcase! We have been working on explanations about how fire spreads and ways to prevent fire hazards. This links to our recent Fire Wise Inquiry, where we explored the science of fire, the hazards it can cause, and how we can help keep ourselves and others in our community safe.
Come and check out our published writing – we are proud of the knowledge we have gained and the way we have shared our learning through a clear and detailed explanation text.
FIRE, FIRE, DANGER, DANGER!
Fire can start at any time at home, parks, forests and dry lands because of chemicals, faulty wiring, and lightning strikes. You can prevent this from happening by moving flammable things away.
Fire can be helpful, but it can be dangerous. Fire starts with something called ignition. To start a fire, you need fuel, heat, and oxygen. Those three things are called the fire triangle. If one of those three things is missing, then you can't make a fire. When fuel, heat, oxygen combine, that is called combustion.
Do you know how fire starts?
Fire can start in so many ways. One way fire can start is radiation, radiation is when heat moves through the air and warms stuff up until it burns. Another way to start a fire is overloaded power plugs, candles near curtains and lightning strikes in dry forests, or you could light a match.
There are different types of fires around the world.
The types of fire are wildfires, housefires, industrial fires, and vehicle fires. Wildfires can happen in forests and grasslands. Wildfires spread very easily and can burn large areas in minutes. Housefires usually happen because of unattended cooking, overloaded power plugs, and candles near curtains. Industrial fires can happen in factories or workplaces, and they could involve chemicals. Vehicle fires are caused by car crashes or engine problems.
How to stay safe from a fire is very important.
These are some ways to stay safe from a fire: keep flammable objects away from heaters, check that plugs are safe, never leave cooking alone, plan an escape or if you see a fire, call 111.
And that is all about fire so you know how to stay safe and how to spot a hazard. Therefore it is important to have an escape plan and a fire extinguisher.

Get Firewise Guys
Fires can easily start anytime or anywhere. It normally starts by unattended cooking, lightning strikes, or flammable stuff. How we can prevent that from happening is by having a fire alarm or fire extinguisher in your house at all times.
Fire is very dangerous to people that don't know how to deal with it.
For fire to it needs the three fire elements they are heat which means a high
Temperature, oxygen, which is the air all around us. There's many different forms of fuel like wood, paper and dry twigs and grass when the fire triangle comes together it forms
combustion.
There are lots of different types of fires, like wildfires, house fires, vehicle fires and industrial fires. Wildfires happen in forests or grasslands. They spread really fast and can burn large areas. Wildfires happen in forests or grasslands. They spread really fast and can burn large areas.
House fires are usually caused by things like heaters, unattended cooking or faulty wiring.
Vehicle fires happen from car crashes or engine problems and can cause very bad injuries.
Industrial fires happen in tall factories or workplaces and may cause chemicals spills.
Fires can start in many different ways like unattended cooking can start a house fire so can overloaded power plugs or faulty wiring. Unattended cooking means that something is cooking and no one is near or supervising, so it could cause house fires. Overloaded power plugs means that the power plugs have too many plugs in them.
It's very important to know how to stay safe in a fire keep all flammable items far away from heaters or hot stuff or it will cause a fire. You can also stay safe by learning how to use a fire extingushier so you can put out a fire.
It is important to stop keeping any eye on cooking and heaters so fires don’t start. If you find an out of control fire make sure you keep safe, call 111 and have an escape plan ready at home!

Fire
In homes or in factories fires can start by unattended cooking or if you have candles by curtains. To prevent this from happening keep flammable objects away from heat.
Fire starts by something called ignition, this is when heat, fuel and oxygen combine. When they combine it makes something called the fire triangle. It goes through a process called combustion. This is when fuel burns and gives off light and heat and smoke. Which then can make a fire.
Common causes of fire are unattended cooking, overloaded power plugs, lightning strikes in dry forests, campfires not being put out properly. Often fires are started because of a hazard. A hazard is something that can cause harm or make a problem. Fires also start from radiation. Radiation is when heat moves in the air and other objects warm up until they burn and catch fire.
There are different types of fires. Some types of fires are wildfires. These happen in forests and grasslands. House fires are usually caused by heaters or kitchen accidents. Industrial fires happen in workplaces and factories. Vehicle fires happen because of engine, gas, and car crashes.
It is important to know how to prevent a fire. Some ways to stay safe are to keep flammable items away from heaters, check that cords and plugs are safe, never walk away from food that is cooking, learn how to use a fire extinguisher and plan an emergency escape plan with your family.
In conclusion, fires can be dangerous, but they can also be helpful. Make sure you are aware of how fires can start and stay safe while cooking and lighting fires.

Fire
Fire can spread anywhere at any time. Fire can be caused by heat, oxygen and fuel by igniting it together. Have you ever been burnt by fire?
How do fires actually start you might wonder? So when you combine heat, oxygen and fuel together it makes fire right. But it doesn't just start on its own. For example if you have a fireplace and a flammable object is next to it, it might start to burn and lead to bigger disasters. Flammable objects are like blankets, couches and so on. Another way they start is because of bad people starting them.
Here is how to put out a fire and prevent it from happening. Firstly how to prevent it. Check that cords and plugs are safe, and keep flammable items away from heaters and fireplaces. NEVER EVER leave cooking unattended. Secondly, to put out a fire, learn to use a fire extinguisher that will come in handy. The minute you see fire, call the fire brigade immediately.
Where can fire be located? Fire can be located at home, forest and in vehicles. For forest fires they use helicopters with water or powder in the bottom of the helicopter and fly over the forest whilel it sprays down.Vehicle fires usually just disintegrate. It doesn't matter where the fire is, it's still dangerous.
A personal experience I had was in kindy,it was a Matariki party and we were roasting marshmallows. I had my stick with my marshmallow on the end, ready to roast it I put it to close and burnt my hand. So from now on I make people do it for me 🙂
In conclusion, we should always be prepared for an emergency and learn how to prevent fires so they don’t happen in the future.

Fires
Oxygen, fuel and heat create a fire that ignites in places like kitchens, garages, forests, grasslands and etc.
How does a fire start? Well, to help you with that. A fire starts with something called ignition. Ignition is where heat, fuel and oxygen combine. There are lots of things that cause fires to start. One of the many things is Unattended cooking. You need to keep a close eye on your cooking so it doesn't burn and catch fire. Another thing is that overloaded power plugs. Make sure you don’t have too many plugs in at a time. Also, make sure you never put burning candles near curtains. Your house is gone in less than three minutes once the curtains catch fire.
How does fire spread? Let me help you with that question. Fire can spread with direct contact: Flames touch something and it catches fire. Radiation: Heat moves through the air and warms up other objects until they burn. Convection: Hot air rises and carries the fire to higher areas, like ceilings or trees. So be careful!
How do you prevent and stay safe from fires? Let's start with how to prevent fires. Keep flammable objects away from a fire. Check that all your cords are safely plugged in. Never leave the stove on and cooking there. Stay safe. Learn how to use a fire extinguisher. Talk to your family about an escape plan and where to meet in an emergency. These are super important things to know for the future if you come across an emergency.
In conclusion, we know fires are dangerous and we need to know how to prevent them in the future.
